Approved leg protection for show jumping
All boots must be designed to wrap around the horse's leg naturally, easily, and without force. This is especially true for boots that protect multiple sides of the horse's leg – they must be pre-shaped so that they naturally mold to the leg. Boots must be no more than 20 cm in height.

Hind leg boots may be single-shell, with protection only on the inside of the fetlock, or double-shell, with protection wrapping around the horse's leg.

Single shell Single-shell boots must have a maximum height of 20 cm at their highest point. Velcro fasteners may or may not be elastic, while stud/pin fasteners must be elastic. The straps must have a minimum width of 5 cm if there is one strap, and 2.5 cm per strap if there are two straps. Approved single-shell boots: Woof Wear Pro Fetlock Boots and Professional's Choice Pro Performance Fetlock Boots.

Double shell Double-shell boots must be designed to wrap around the leg easily and naturally. Velcro and stud fasteners must be elastic and have a minimum width of 5 cm for a single strap, and 2.5 cm per strap for two straps. The maximum height is 20 cm at the highest point. Approved Professional's Choice double-shell boots: Pro Mesh TPU Boot (Front and Hind Legs), Pro Performance Stud/Hook Boot (Front and Hind Legs), and Pro Performance Velcro Boot (Front and Hind Legs). Approved Woof Wear double-shell boots: Smart Tendon and Fetlock Boots and Pro Tendon Boot.

Closures All Velcro fasteners may feature a horizontal or vertical safety strap that secures over the main strap around the leg.

  • Other approved fastening mechanisms (not applicable to young horse classes): Stud/hook, hook, and split straps (any part of the strap in contact with the horse's leg must have a minimum width of 2.5 cm). All straps must lie flat against the horse's leg; they must not fold or twist.

  • Unauthorized fastening mechanisms: Drawstrings, buckles, and ratchets. The strap must never wrap completely around the boot/leg.

Inside and weight It is strictly prohibited to add extra weight to the horse's boots, nor is it permitted to insert anything into the boot's lining or the inside of the straps. The inside of the boots, whether in direct or indirect contact with the horse's leg, must not be hard or rough. The lining of the boots must be soft and shock-absorbing. Sheepskin lining is permitted, as is the use of bandages.

Leg protection for young horses Specifically for young horses, the fastening system must consist of non-elastic Velcro with a minimum width of 5 cm. For young horses, only hind leg boots with protection on the inside of the fetlock joint are allowed. The maximum height for hind leg boots is 16 cm. Elastics are strictly prohibited for young horses, and only Velcro fasteners are permitted. For young horse competitions, both Woof Wear Pro Fetlock Boots and Professional's Choice Pro Performance Fetlock Boots are approved (per FEI Rules 2022).
