Before Absorbine the brand was born, W. F. Young worked as a piano supplier and relied on the family's herd of horses; Mary Ida Young was an avid gardener and herbalist.
If a horse went lame back in 1892, it was a common practice of "blistering" - that is, blistering. The blistered skin would provide more blood supply to the leg, and the blood supply would promote healing of the injury that may have caused the lameness. Mary Ida believed that there must surely be a better and more humane way to treat a lame horse. Using her knowledge of healing herbs, she created a special blend of herbs and essential oils that became a tincture designed to promote blood flow and healing - without the pain of burns and blisters on the horse's skin.
Wilbur and Mary Ida began using this mixture on their own horses every day. They were so excited about the effect that they named the product Absorbine Veterinary Liniment, and Wilbur started taking it on some of his deliveries. One day he had a trip to Syracuse, New York, where he sold an entire case to a racetrack. He wrote to Mary Ida on the way home: "I have had $42,80 worth of 'Absorbine' orders this month. Let the good work go on. Some day we will make this boom... Lovingly Yours, Wilbur."
Today, we know Veteterinary Liniment to Liquid or Gel Embrocation, and it is internationally known and liked as a muscle liniment for horses.
The product range has grown steadily since 1892, and today Absorbine is particularly known for its effective fly spray - Ultra Shield; "The black one that works". In 2020, a new alternative to the black Ultra Shield - the all-natural Ultra Shield Green.
Ultra Shield Green is a summer comfort spray completely without chemicals. It consists of an effective and pleasant composition of oils - for example citronella, thyme oil, clover oil, rosemary oil, geraniol and others. The composition provides a pleasant and effective scent that can act as a deterrent to flies and insects, thus providing fly protection for the horse.
The traditional black Ultra Shield fly spray has the active ingredients pyrethrin and permethrin, and this fly repellent for horses is both tested and approved by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency - and the biocide tax is paid. In addition to being an effective fly spray, Ultra Shield provides both sun protection and coat care for the horse, as it contains aloe vera and lanolin.
In addition, Absorbine has developed a range of super effective grooming products that not only help you comb out the mane and tail, but also condition and strengthen the hair. The range of grooming products for coat, mane and tail is called Show Sheen and includes Showshine, which effectively helps you comb out the mane and tail of your horse. Show Sheen Original Hair Polish & Detangler showshine contains, for example, provitamins that nourish the coat and silk proteins that strengthen the mane and tail. If you are a heavy user of Show Sheen spray, you can invest in the 1 gallon canister - 1 gallon equals 3.8 liters.
In combination with showshine spray, you can use Detangler Gel, which nourishes the hair strands and is designed to handle even the most tangled knots. The fragrant gel provides high shine and a silky smooth finish that lasts for days.
To care for your horse's coat, you can use Santa Fe, which has been developed by hair specialists and contains silk proteins that strengthen the coat, mane and tail, as well as vitamin E, panthenol and sun protection. Santa Fe is designed so that you can also easily use it in the saddle, as it doesn't get out of place and keeps your equipment stable.
Relatively new on the market is Silver Honey wound ointment from Absorbine , which is natural, effective and fast-acting. Silver Honey contains, among other things, Manuka honey, shea butter, panthenol, glycerine and marigold extract. Manuka honey is made from pollen exclusively from Manuka trees in New Zealand, and this special honey is known to be antibacterial without drying out the skin. In addition, the ointment contains MicroSilver BG, which is known to protect against unwanted bacteria and maintain the skin's natural flora. Silver Honey is available in two variants - a spray gel and an ointment.
When it comes to horse shampoo, Absorbine can also join in, as the brand has developed the effective 2-in-1 horse shampoo and conditioner. 2-in-1 Shampoo & Conditioner for horses deeply cleanses and conditions the horse's hair in one step. It leaves the coat, mane and tail extremely soft and the pH-balanced formula is specially designed for the sensitive skin of horses.
If you need a quick clean without water, Absorbine also has a solution here. With Showsheen Miracle Groom you get a horse shampoo that works without the use of water. Miracle Groom "Bath-in-a-Bottle" is an all-in-one care product for horses. It cleans, conditions, fragrances, anti-filter and shines the coat, and is highly effective as it doesn't require water to rinse or additional soap.
For white horses, we recommend Stain Remover & Whitener, which is an effective and fast-acting stain remover that leaves white and light hair completely clean and shiny. With Oxi-Eraser stain remover, "deep-cleaning" results are achieved without affecting the color of the coat and without blueing ingredients. Stain Remover is developed with a pH value specifically for the horse, so the skin is not unnecessarily stressed.
You can dive into the Hooflex range - both if your horse has hoof problems and if it doesn't. Hooflex ranges from hoof lacquer for competition and show to products for treating hoof disorders such as white line desease and acid ray.
Frog & Sole is a highly effective means of combating the bacteria that cause acid rain and white line disease. The bottle containing Frog & Sole has a clever heel spout, making it easy to get the product into the jet or white line. Remember to clean the hoof well before applying Frog & Sole.
To prevent bad hooves, you can use Hooflex hoof oil. Absorbines hoof oil comes in two variants - the original and the natural. Both deeply nourish the hoof from the inside out, but the natural hoof oil contains, among other things, tea tree oil, arnica, comfrey and avocado oil and no chemicals or dyes.
We typically have a lot of leather equipment for our horses and it can be hard work for the leather when exposed to dirt, dust, sweat and grease from the horse. Therefore, it's important to take effective care of the leather so we can extend its lifespan and optimize its appearance. Naturally, Absorbine we also have a solution for this: the effective range of leather care products Leather Therapy.
Leather Therapy includes the leather soap Wash and the leather conditioner Restorer & Conditioner. Both Absorbine 's leather soap and leather conditioner are designed to deeply nourish and bring out the natural color of the leather. To finish off, you can use Leather Finish, which gives the final touch to a beautiful surface and can help protect the leather; and Water Repellent, which is an impregnation for leather and effectively protects leather against water, mud and the Danish weather in general. Leather Therapy can be used for all types of leather products, not just riding gear. You can use Absorbine leather soap, leather balm and leather protection for shoes, boots, bags etc.
Many of Absorbine's equine care products can also be used for dogs. For example, Show Sheen Detangler Gel is a great product for dogs with long fur and leg tabs. If you have a dog that often needs a bath, Miracle Groom is a great alternative, so your dog can get clean without having to bathe and wash with water every time it has been in the stable.
Absorbine has developed the Show Sheen range specifically for dogs, so you can get both Miracle Groom "Bath in a Bottle", Show Sheen spray and Stain Remover & Whitner developed specifically for dogs' fur and skin. Although Santa Fe is designed for horses, you can use it on your dog. Some dogs have such thin fur that the skin can be stressed by the sun - Santa Fe is a good choice here, as it is a product that both nourishes the coat with vitamin E and panthenol while providing UV protection.
