3 things to look for when choosing a saddle pad
Breathability and moisture-wicking
The saddle pad sits directly against the horse's body – especially with the weight of a saddle and rider – so it is crucial that the fabric allows the skin to breathe and wicks moisture away. Seeing moisture on the outer surface of the pad is actually a positive sign; it indicates that the pad is effectively directing sweat away from the horse's skin.
Reinforcement at the girth area
Girth straps cause significant wear and tear on a pad due to the constant pressure and movement in this area. If you are choosing between a pad with or without reinforcement, we strongly recommend choosing the one WITH reinforcement – it will significantly extend the pad's lifespan. Psst... Woof Wear pads also feature clever 'girth strap separation loops' that keep the straps organized, preventing them from overlapping and causing uncomfortable pressure points or rubs.
Ergonomic shape
To perform correctly, a horse needs total freedom of movement. It is therefore wise to choose a pad that respects the horse's anatomy, providing ample clearance for the withers and the spine to avoid restriction.
Bonus: Shock absorption and pressure distribution
Do you or your horse struggle with back sensitivity? The right pad can alleviate many of these issues. Both horse and rider are exposed to repeated impacts through the back during riding, which can cause discomfort over time. Matrix has developed specialized pads for this exact challenge; in fact, many dressage riders find it much easier to sit the trot on big-moving horses when using a Matrix pad. These pads increase comfort for both horse and rider – once you've tried Matrix, you won't want to go back!
