Breathability and moisture wicking
The saddle pad lies close to the horse's body - especially with a saddle and rider on it, so it's important that the pad allows the horse's skin to breathe and wicks moisture away from the horse's skin. When you see moisture on the surface of the pad, it's actually not a bad thing; it means that the pad is capable of directing moisture away from the horse.

Reinforcement at the girth straps
Girth straps can wear heavily on a pad, as there is a lot of pressure in this area due to movements and tension from the girth. If you're choosing between two different pads with or without reinforcement, we definitely recommend choosing the pad WITH reinforcement - you'll have a pad with a longer lifespan. Psst... Woof Wear pads also have clever 'girth strap separation loops' that keep the girth straps separated, so they don't overlap and cause sore pressure points.

Ergonomic shape
For the horse to perform the exercises we demand of it, it needs the freedom to move within those exercises. Therefore, it's a good idea to choose a pad that respects the horse's anatomical shape and provides room for the withers and spine.

Bonus: Shock absorption and pressure distribution
Do you or your horse suffer from back pain? With the right pad, many of these issues can be alleviated. Both horse and rider are exposed to many shocks through the back during riding - shocks that can, over time, cause pain throughout the back. Matrix has developed special pads for this very challenge; in fact, we hear from many dressage riders that they find it easier to sit the trot on horses with big movement when using a Matrix pad. The pad increases comfort for both horse and rider; we simply can't do without Matrix anymore!
