Leg protection

Bandages, bells and gaiters for support and protection

The large gaits that dressage horses often have, combined with difficult dressage exercises, means that dressage horses are at risk of banging their legs against each other. This is obviously not very smart, as it can cause both tendon and bone damage. Naturally, horses don't have much padding on their legs, as tendons and bones lie just under the skin. Especially from the front knee down and from the hocks down, bones and tendons are exposed as there are no muscles to protect them. If the horse has a tendency to forge or knock its legs together, you can protect against blows by giving the horse bandages or gaiters on the front and hind legs and bells if the horse often kicks off shoes or steps on its own ball.

Bandages are often the most preferred form of leg protection in dressage. The purpose is to protect the horse's tendons in the demanding dressage exercises - in addition, they can also provide minor protection against impact. Please note that under some bandages, bandage pads should be used. Bandage pads provide a pressure-distributing effect so that the bandage does not tighten too much around the horse's legs.

Gaiters are recommended if the horse has a tendency to bang its legs together, as gaiters provide better protection against impact than bandages. Gaiters are available in a variety of materials, some cooling and others designed to increase blood circulation in the horse's legs.

Bells can be used in different contexts. They can be used in the paddock if the horse often steps out of its shoes, or during training if the horse steps on itself and injures its ball.

However, be aware of your use of leg protection, as it has been shown that the temperature of the legs increases quite a lot when the horse wears leg protection while riding. If the legs are exposed to the high temperatures often and for a long time, the heat will cause the cells in the tendons and ligaments to degenerate, making the horse's legs weaker and more prone to tendon, ligament or ligament damage. However, with the correct use of leg protection, this can be remedied and be a great benefit in protecting your horse's legs.

Professional's Choice has designed the smart 2XCool gaiters, which are made of a material "Brrr" that is designed to be cooling. 2XCool is the new generation of Sports Medicine Boots and designed to be cooling, comfortable and solid with long durability. The gaiters are neoprene-free, but constructed in ultra-lightweight and breathable material. 2XCool has 4-way stretch and therefore provides great support for the horse's legs.
