Insects & Summer rashes

Help your horse and get rid of summer eczema!

Summer eczema is a major problem for some horses. Summer eczema is caused by allergies, especially to midges, but can also be caused by allergies to other summer stinging and biting insects. It is mainly Icelandic horses imported from Iceland that suffer from summer eczema, as moths are supposedly not found in Iceland and the horses' immune systems are not adapted to the small biting insects. The condition summer eczema is chronic and seasonal. Summer eczema is characterized by intense itching, especially in the mane and tail, but also under the belly and along the back, where it can result in hair loss and thickening of the skin.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for summer eczema and it is believed to be genetic. The best way to help your horse if they have summer eczema is to prevent and protect them from insects. Through effective insect control from the start of fly season, you can spare your horse as much as possible - so they don't lose the hairs on their mane and tail.

The black Ultra Shield fly spray from Absorbine   is an effective way to help your horse get rid of midges. In addition to providing insect control, which can also be done by giving the horse a fly mask and insect cover, it can also be a good idea to let the horse into the stable in the morning and evening when the midges are most active. If you can't let the horse in, you'll need to work with Ultrashield, and it's important that the horse has access to shelter and shade - an open area with a fresh breeze can also be a great advantage, as midges don't like wind.
