Leg protection
Take care of your horse's legs and extend their durability!Protecting your horse's legs can make a big difference on a distance ride. Naturally, the horse namely doesn't have much padding on its legs, as tendons and bones lie just under the skin. Especially from the front knee down and from the hocks down, the bones and tendons are exposed, as there are no muscles to protect them. This means that it can be very damaging if the horse often bends its legs together, which can result in tendon or bone damage. It can therefore be a good idea to wear leg protection when riding endurance to help your horse's legs last as long as possible. Leg protection for endurance riding can be gaiters that protect against impact and bells that protect the buttocks and shoes if the horse steps on itself. Gaiters for distance can be used to both protect and support the horse's legs. Some gaiters have reinforcements, such as plastic, to provide extra protection against impact - these reinforcements are often called strike surfaces, as they allow the legs to strike each other without causing damage. Some riders prefer to use bandages instead of gaiters. Bandages can also be used as impact protection, however, they are not as effective. |
