Leg protection

Protect your ice luger's legs - and prevent them from losing their shoes!

There hasn't been much of a tradition of leg protection in the sport of Icelandic Walking. However, it's becoming more and more used and accepted - especially for pass races, where the horse moves its legs quickly and can risk hitting its legs against each other, which can cause major damage to bones and tendons.  It can also be a good idea for picnics, TREC or mountain trails, if the horse is at risk of getting into extreme positions and shaking its legs on obstacles or knocking them together.

Naturally, horses don't have much padding on their legs, as tendons and bones lie just under the skin. Especially from the front knee down and from the hocks down, bones and tendons are exposed as there are no muscles to protect them. If your horse has a tendency to kick or bang its legs together, you can protect against blows by providing bandages or gaiters on the front and hind legs, and bells if the horse frequently kicks off shoes or steps on its own buttocks.

If your Icelandic horse needs gaiters because it bends its legs together, it's important that you choose gaiters made of lightweight material so that it doesn't hamper its gait. Bells are also very useful and can be especially beneficial for trail riding and in the paddock if your horse frequently takes off its shoes.

Professional's Choice has developed a range of bells in different materials and designs. You can easily find bells that meet your Icelandic horse's needs so that it doesn't drop its shoes or risk injuring itself if its hind legs step on its front legs. Take for example a look at the smart Ballistic bells, which are equipped with a no-turn bulge so that the bell stays in place around the code. If your horse has sensitive skin, it may be an advantage to have leg protection with lambskin, as it is gentler on the skin. Professional's Choice has several models of bells with lambskin.
