Behind Prof. Choice

The full story of Professional's Choice started back in 1976 when founder Dal Scott broke his leg in a riding accident. Hoping to recover faster, he developed neoprene orthopedic products. This was the start of Dricast Orthopedics, Inc - what we know today as Professional's Choice. Dal had a passion for horses, so naturally it wasn't long before they focused on equine equipment instead of human equipment. Development and production of therapeutic equine products began in 1986, when the brand was renamed Professional's Choice Sports Medicine Products, Inc.

After the brand was renamed - Professional's Choice - the research and development team began working on what is now known as the original Sports Medicine Boot. Many hours of study went into creating the most protective and shock-absorbing gaiters on the market, debuting in 1990. Since the launch of the first Sports Medicine Boots in 1990, the development and launch of several products has progressed steadily. There have been a number of new generations of Sports Medicine Boots - the latest, 2XCool Sports Medicine Boots, is made from a completely new and groundbreaking material.

2XCool Sports Medicine Boots with Brrr and Tripple Chill Effect

This new generation of Sports Medicine Boots is designed for cooling, comfort and durability. The gaiters are neoprene-free but constructed in ultra-lightweight and breathable material. 2XCool has 4-way stretch and therefore provides great support for the horse's legs.

The liner in the gaiters is made of 2XCool Performance Fabric from Brrr°. It is an advanced material that combines naturally cooling minerals with active moisture absorption and quick drying. This creates a "Triple Chill Effect" that effectively wicks both heat and moisture away from the skin, fur and legs. Watch the video here to learn more about 2XCool Performance Fabric from Brrr°. A lot of heat is generated from the horse's legs when working. High temperatures can damage the tendons in the legs over a long period of time, so it's really smart to have a technology that cools so you can take extra care of your horse's legs!

The new generation has also been equipped with Kevlar for support around the fork strap. Kevlar is the same material used in knee protectors, so it is an effective material to protect against impact and pressure. Kevlar adapts and moves freely with the leg, providing good girth support without restricting the horse's freedom of movement.

Girths

The girth is an important part of your horse's equipment - in fact, it's been said that the fit and fit of the girth is just as important as the fit and fit of the saddle. However, choosing a good quality girth, as found at Professional's Choice, goes a long way. The brand has developed a range of quality girths for jumping, dressage and western - girths with and without lambskin and ergonomic girths if you and your horse prefer.

If your horse suffers from girth cramps, it can also be a great advantage to switch to a good girth with a pressure-distributing effect. Girth cramps are when the muscles in the girth bed go into spasm. It is a very painful condition for the horse, and mentally it can be deeply ingrained so that the horse will be sad in the future when the girth needs to be tightened. By tightening the girth gradually every time you put on the saddle and re-tightening when you warm up, you can avoid the horse getting girth cramps. A quality girth with good pressure distribution is a great benefit for all horses, but especially for the sensitive horse that tends to get girth cramps.

It's just as important that the girth fits the horse's needs and physique as it is that the saddle fits the horse - a wrong girth can do just as much damage as a wrong saddle. For example, if the girth doesn't fit, you risk the saddle sliding forward, putting pressure on the horse's shoulders and restricting the movement of the shoulder blade. The shoulder blade moves 4-5 cm when the horse moves its front leg, so there must be plenty of room. Once you have tightened the girth, the buckle should be above the elbow so that the elbow does not hit the buckle, as this is uncomfortable for the horse.

Fly protection

During the summer months, flies and other insects are a major nuisance for horses, so it's often a good idea to help your horse by providing insect protection. Some horses are so bothered by flies around their eyes that they suffer from conjunctivitis. If you have a horse that suffers a lot from conjunctivitis or is bothered by flies and midges in the ears, you can help your horse a lot by putting on a fly mask. A fly mask for your horse should preferably have a high level of comfort, such as the Comfort Fit Fly Mask from Professional's Choice. Professional's Choice fly masks have mesh around the eyes and ears and a hole in the forehead.

Summer eczema can be curbed with fly and insect protection

Summer eczema is a major problem for some horses. Summer eczema is caused by allergies to midges in particular, but can also be caused by allergies to other summer stinging and biting insects. It is mainly Icelandic horses imported from Iceland that suffer from summer eczema, as moths are supposedly not found in Iceland and the horses' immune system is therefore not adapted to the small biting insects. The condition summer eczema is chronic and seasonal. It is characterized by intense itching, especially in the mane and tail, but also under the belly and along the back, where it can result in hair loss and thickening of the skin.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for summer eczema and it is believed to be genetic. The best way to help your horse if it has summer eczema is to prevent and protect it from insects. Through effective insect control from the start of fly season, you can spare your horse as much as possible - so it doesn't lose the hairs on its mane and tail. The black Ultrashield is a great weapon in the fight against summer eczema. The black Ultrashield and Ultrashield Green help your horse get rid of mites to reduce the allergic reaction.

If you didn't get started with fly protection against summer eczema, or it hasn't worked and your horse is still itchy, you can help your horse with Belly Balm from Professional's Choice. Belly Balm is a thick ointment that can be applied both in the ears and under the belly, where the horse can be particularly bothered by insects.
