Girths and Cinches

Find product » Girths and Cinches

The main job of the girth is to keep the saddle in place - but it needs to do more than that! If your horse isn't happy with the girth it has, it can be hindered in its work. With the wrong girth, the horse can even experience discomfort and pain, get girth sores and pressure in the girth bed. Of course, as riders, we don't want that. The type of girth your horse needs is individual - some horses thrive with an elastic girth; some jumpers benefit from a plate girth to protect their belly while jumping; and some horses have sensitive skin and will thrive with a lambskin girth.

Some horses are prone to girth cramps, fortunately this is something that can be remedied - both by choosing the correct girth with good pressure distribution and by tightening the girth a little at a time. A dressage girth from Matrix can be a good choice. Matrix designs both underlay and girths with pressure distribution and shock absorption.

Girths with pressure distribution

If your horse suffers from girth cramps, a girth with pressure distribution can be an advantage. Pressure distribution means that the pressure from the saddle is spread over a larger surface, so the horse doesn't get sore stress points in the girth. Matrix has developed a range of girths with both pressure distribution and shock absorption. This means you can take a lot of care of your horse - both if it suffers from girth cramps, but also to stay ahead of the game and try to get a more durable horse.

The girth must fit

Even if you buy a high-quality girth, it's not a given that it will fit your horse. In fact, a girth that doesn't fit is just as bad as a saddle that doesn't fit. If the girth doesn't fit, it can result in the saddle slipping forward. A saddle that slides forward will put pressure on the horse's shoulders, preventing it from moving properly. Shoulder freedom is important regardless of discipline, as the horse's shoulders move 4-5 cm every time it takes a step.

In addition, it is important that there is good freedom of movement for the horse's elbows. When checking the fit of the girth, look at where the buckles are in relation to the horse's elbows. The buckle must be above the elbows, otherwise there is a risk of the horse hitting the buckles with its elbows when it moves.

Girth cramp

Girth cramp is when the muscles in the girth go into spasm. It's a very painful condition for the horse, and mentally, it can be deeply ingrained so that the horse will be apprehensive about having the girth tightened in the future. By tightening the girth gradually each time you put on the saddle and re-tightening as you warm up, you can prevent your horse from getting girth cramp. A quality girth with good pressure distribution is a great benefit for all horses, but especially for the sensitive horse that suffers from girth cramps.
