Choosing equipment with a soft lining can be an advantage for many horses, as it's not uncommon for the horse's delicate skin to wear away from the equipment. Most people prefer girths, gaiters, bells, etc. with lambskin as it is a natural material with a high level of comfort.

Professional's Choice also has a range of girths with real lambskin on the lining, which both distributes pressure and protects the delicate skin of the horse's girth. However, the brand has chosen to focus more on equipment with "Faux Shearling" lining - that is, artificial lambskin or fleece.

One of the reasons is that fleece is more durable. Artificial lambskin is more durable and resistant to, among other things, moisture from the horse's skin. Another reason - and a big advantage for you - is that fleece is much easier to maintain than lambskin, again because it can withstand more.

Maintenance of lambskin:

Because lambskin is a natural material, in the long run it won't be able to withstand the acid in your horse's sweat. It will weaken and break down the fibers in the material, which means that the lambskin will eventually become less able to distribute pressure, lose some of its softness and may even shed a little. Of course, you can extend the life of the lambskin if you wash and clean it properly.
  • Always make sure the equipment is hung in an airy place so that moisture can evaporate. This provides poor conditions for bacteria, increases the lifespan of your lambskin and you don't run the same risk of the horse being exposed to fungus or bacteria through the equipment.
  • Once the leather is dry, you can brush it with a stiff brush or groom to remove dirt, dust and the stiffness that can occur as it dries.
  • If the lambskin needs a wash, hand wash in cold water and use a mild soap - possibly wool detergent. You can use Absorbine's Leather Therapy Saddle Pad & Blanket Wash.

Caring for fleece:

As fleece (or Faux Shearling) is a man-made material, it is more resistant. For example, you will find that fleece will weaken from exposure to sweat and moisture in the same way that real lambskin does.
  • Always make sure the equipment is hanging in an airy place to allow moisture to evaporate. This provides poor conditions for bacteria, increases longevity and you don't run the same risk of the horse being exposed to fungus or bacteria through the equipment.
  • As with the lambskin, you can brush the fleece lining with a stiff brush once it's dry. Because fleece is slightly shorter than lambskin, it's easier to brush clean properly and it doesn't get quite as stiff as lambskin.
  • Fleece linings should be hand washed in cold water and you should use a mild soap, such as Absorbine's Leather Therapy Saddle Pad & Blanket Wash. Again, because fleece lining is shorter in hair than lambskin, it will dry somewhat faster.
