Questions for Dale Myler

The horse gets strong and long after the jumps

Question: I am currently riding my 5 year old Thoroughbred, retired from the track, with a Level 2 Myler bit with loose rings, but he gets very strong, long and flat after the jumps. Which bit would you recommend?

Answer: For a green horse, we generally recommend an MB04 (Level 2) mouthpiece, which it sounds like you have. Instead of changing the mouthpiece, we suggest you try a combination bit with the same mouthpiece. The combination bit will first apply pressure under the chin, on the bridge of the nose and in the neck before applying pressure in the horse's mouth.

The combination bit with the MB04 mouthpiece is very popular among show jumpers and military riders, but is also used by some Icelandic riders.
