Bite with hooks

You may have come across a Myler bite with hooks; it can be either a D-ring, Eggbutt or Western Dee bite that can be selected with hooks.

If you have chosen or are considering trying a hooked bite, read here about the tools and benefits of using a hooked bite.

  • A side piece with hooks allows you to attach the cheek piece of the bridle to the side piece, which means that the bit is stable and still in the horse's mouth. This can be a great benefit for some horses that are affected by excessive mouth agitation.
  • In addition, the reins can also be attached to hooks in the mouthpiece. This allows you to use Independent Side Movement, a feature that many Myler bits have.
  • If you attach the reins to the hooks, you will also achieve a small leverage effect.
  • Finally, D-ring and eggbutt bits have a small ring on each side piece that you can attach a curb chain or curb strap to for an indirect rein effect.
