Bit size

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon to see people riding around with a bit that doesn't fit their horse - typically, we see that people have chosen a bit that is too big for their horse. A bit that doesn't fit the horse will cause discomfort and uneasiness; if the bit is too big, it will be unsettled and risk sliding from side to side in the horse's mouth; if the bit is too small, it will gnaw and bother the corners of the horse's mouth.

If you want to check if your horse can fit the bit it wears, do the following.

  • Grasp one side piece and pull out to the side so that the opposite side makes contact with the corner of your horse's mouth.
  • There should not be too much space on the side you have pulled the bit to.
  • On bits with loose rings, leave 0.5 cm to prevent the rings from pinching the corners of the horse's mouth.
  • On bits with fixed side pieces (e.g. D-rings and Eggbutt), the side pieces should be close to the corners of the horse's mouth, without pinching, of course.
  • If you use a Baucher bit (side piece with suspension), be aware that the suspension itself must not pinch the horse's cheek when the side piece is stable against the corner of the horse's mouth.

If you are unsure if your bit fits in size, if it is the right mouthpiece or if you have age-related challenges that may be due to the bit, contact a certified Myler dealer - or write to us and we will help you find one near you!
