Fly protection

The product range has grown steadily since its inception in 1892, and today Absorbine   is best known for its effective fly spray - Ultra Shield; "The black one that works". In 2020, a new alternative to the black Ultra Shield - the all-natural Ultra Shield Green.

Ultra Shield Green is a summer comfort spray completely without chemicals. It consists of an effective and pleasant composition of oils - for example citronella, thyme oil, clover oil, rosemary oil, geraniol and others. The composition provides a pleasant and effective scent that can act as a deterrent to flies and insects, thus providing fly protection for the horse.

The traditional black Ultra Shield fly spray has the active ingredients pyrethrin and permethrin, and this fly repellent for horses is both tested and approved by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency - and the biocide tax is paid. In addition to being an effective fly spray, Ultra Shield provides both sun protection and coat care for the horse, as it contains aloe vera and lanolin.

Is Ultrashield doping free? YES!

We are regularly asked if Ultrashield (Black and Green) contains substances that are considered doping. The answer is NO - neither Ultrashield Black nor Ultrashield Green contain or have contained substances that are or have been on the FEI doping list. You can therefore safely use Ultrashield spray - also for competitions.

We have previously recommended not to use Ultrashield Green for horses participating in trotting or gallop races or competitions in Sweden. There used to be cedarwood oil in the green Ultrashield, however, this ingredient has been removed, so you can safely use Ultrashield Green for ALL sport and race horses if you have one of the new bottles without cedarwood oil (the label on the bottle clearly states if it contains cedarwood oil). Ultrashield Green does not contain and has never contained substances that are or have been on the FEI doping list.

Ultra Shield fly spray for broodmares and foals

Both broodmares and foals must of course also be protected if they are bothered by flies, mosquitoes, midges, midges etc. But then comes the question - can you use Ultrashield on mares and foals?

YES - you can use Ultrashield on HUGE mares; both the black and the green.

YES - you can use Ultrashield on DYING mares; both the black and the green, but we do not recommend spraying in the udder area.

YES - you can use Ultrashield on FEMALES that are at least 12 weeks old; both the black and the green.

YES - you can use the GREEN Ultrashield on newborn foals.

NO - do not use the BLACK Ultrashield on foals UNDER 12 weeks of age.

Relieve summer eczema with fly protection for horses

Summer eczema is a major problem for some horses. Summer eczema is caused by allergies to midges in particular, but can also be caused by allergies to other summer stinging and biting insects. It is mainly Icelandic horses imported from Iceland that suffer from summer eczema, as moths are supposedly not found in Iceland and the horses' immune system is therefore not adapted to the small biting insects. The condition summer eczema is chronic and seasonal. It is characterized by intense itching, especially in the mane and tail, but also under the belly and along the back, where it can result in hair loss and thickening of the skin.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for summer eczema and it is believed to be genetic. The best way to help your horse if it has summer eczema is to prevent and protect it from insects. Through effective insect control from the start of fly season, you can spare your horse as much as possible - so it doesn't lose the hairs on its mane and tail. The black Ultrashield is a great weapon in the fight against summer eczema. The black Ultrashield and Ultrashield Green help your horse get rid of midges to reduce the allergic reaction.

Eye inflammation in horses

Some horses are so bothered by flies around their eyes that they suffer a lot with conjunctivitis. If you have a horse that suffers a lot from conjunctivitis or is bothered by flies and midges in the ears, you can help your horse a lot by wearing a fly mask. A fly mask for horses should preferably have a high level of comfort. Absorbine   has developed the Ultra Shield fly mask, which is made from high-tec material originally developed for human sportswear. Absorbine's fly mask has stitching at the eyes to ensure that the mask does not interfere with the horse's eyes - and they are made from a mesh that blocks out 80% of UV radiation.
